Learn Flumen inside out
Guides, tutorials, and references to help you get the most out of Flumen Studio.
Getting Started
Welcome to Flumen Studio. This section covers system requirements and everything you need to get up and running.
System Requirements
- macOS 12 (Monterey) or later, Apple Silicon or Intel
- 8GB RAM minimum, 16GB recommended for 4K projects
- FFmpeg installed via Homebrew (
brew install ffmpeg) - Disk space: 500MB for the app, plus space for video projects
Installation
- 1Download the DMG from the Flumen website
- 2Open the DMG and drag Flumen Studio to the Applications folder
- 3On first launch, if macOS blocks it, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click "Open Anyway"
Creating a Project
- 1Launch Flumen Studio
- 2Enter a project name
- 3Select resolution: 1080p (1920x1080) or 4K (3840x2160) - default is 4K
- 4Select framerate: 24, 25, 30, 50, or 60 fps - default is 25
- 5Click "Create Project"
The resolution and framerate determine the canvas size and export output. Choose 4K for the highest quality. The framerate should match your source video.
Opening an Existing Project
Click "Open Project" on the start screen and select a .flumen project file.
Interface Overview
The editor has four main areas:
- Left Panel (Media Bin): Activity Data, Video Clips, Audio Files, Overlays. Below is the Layers Panel with visibility and ordering controls.
- Center (Canvas & Preview): Main canvas with video and overlays. Play controls below.
- Right Panel (Properties & Elements): Elements Panel for adding widgets, Properties Panel for editing selected element.
- Bottom (Timeline): Multi-track timeline with video, overlay, and audio tracks.
Importing Activity Data
Supported Formats
- FIT - Garmin, Wahoo, Hammerhead, and other bike computers
- GPX - Universal GPS exchange format
- TCX - Garmin Training Center
Supported Data Fields

Linking Data to Video
- 1Add a video clip to the timeline
- 2The activity data is automatically linked if timestamps overlap
- 3Adjust the sync offset in the clip properties if needed
Strava Integration
Connect your Strava account to import activities directly. Go to Activity Data > Strava and authorize the connection.
Adding Data Points
Data points display live activity metrics on the canvas showing the current value at the playback position.
- 1Click on an overlay clip in the timeline to edit it
- 2In the Elements panel (right side), click a data point under "Data Points"
- 3The data point appears on the canvas - drag to position it
Available Data Points
- Speed: Current, Max, Average
- Power: Current, 3s Average, 10s Average, Max, Average, Normalized Power
- Cadence: Current, 3s Average, 10s Average, Max, Average
- Heart Rate: Current, Max, Average
- Grade: Current (computed from elevation with smoothing)
- Elevation: Current, Total Climbing
- Temperature: Current
- Distance: Current, Total
- Time: Elapsed, Total Duration
- Gear: Current, Total Shifts
Variants & Units
Selecting Variants
After adding a data point, select its variant in the Properties panel under "Data Point". For example, add a Speed data point, then change it from "Current" to "Max" or "Average" in the dropdown.
Units
- Speed: km/h, mph, pace/km, pace/mi
- Temperature: Celsius, Fahrenheit
- Distance: Kilometers, Miles
Elevation Profile
Displays the full ride elevation chart with optional current position indicator.
Controls: Show Current Position, Zoom, Fill (solid/gradient), Stroke, Dot, Smoothness.
Route Overview
Displays the GPS track from the activity data.
Controls: Show Current Position, Stroke, Dot.
Gear Distribution
Shows time spent in each gear as a bar chart.
Controls: Orientation, Bar Roundness, Bar Width/Spacing, Time Format, Font settings, Label Gap/Rotation, Bar Background/Colors.
Power Zones
Shows time spent in each power training zone. Set your FTP value and zones are auto-calculated.

HR Zones
Shows time spent in each heart rate training zone. Set your Max HR and zones are auto-calculated.

Picture
Add any image file (PNG, JPG, SVG, WebP, GIF, BMP).
Controls: Image selector, Fit (Contain/Cover/Stretch), Background Color, Border Radius, Border.
Icon
Add icons from the Phosphor icon library.
Controls: Icon Picker, Fill Color, Transparency.
Shape
Add geometric shapes (rectangle, circle, ellipse, triangle, line).
Controls: Shape Type, Fill (solid/gradient), Gradient Angle, Stroke, Transparency.
Text
Add custom text labels. Double-click to edit inline.
Controls: Font, Font Style, Font Size (up to 1000px), Text Alignment, Text Color. Text auto-wraps.
Text & Font Controls
Shared across all text elements:
- Font Selection: All system fonts, style variants, last used becomes default
- Font Size: In pixels, default is 10% of canvas height
- Text Color: RGBA with opacity
- Text Alignment: Left, Center, Right
Appearance Controls
- Transparency: 0% opaque to 100% invisible
- Fill: Solid, Linear Gradient (with angle), Radial Gradient
- Drop Shadow: Color, X/Y Offset, Blur
Size & Position
- X, Y position in pixels from top-left
- W, H dimensions
- Rotation 0-360 degrees
- Alignment: 3x3 grid for canvas alignment
- Multi-selection: Align and Distribute tools
Canvas Interaction
- Selection: Click to select, Shift+click to add, click empty to deselect.
- Moving: Drag or arrow keys.
- Resizing: Corner/edge handles, Shift for aspect ratio.
- Rotating: Rotation handle above element.
- Text Editing: Double-click to edit, Escape to exit.
- Context Menu: Right-click for Copy, Paste, Duplicate, Delete, Bring to Front, Send to Back.

Creating Overlays
Click "New Overlay" in the Media Bin to create a new overlay.
Editing Overlays
Click an overlay clip on the timeline to edit it in-place. Changes auto-save.
Multiple Overlays
Create different layouts and place them on the overlay track at different positions.
360 Video - Supported Formats
Supported: Equirectangular MP4 and .360 files. For .360 files, convert via GoPro Player first.
Reframing Controls
- Yaw: -180 to 180
- Pitch: -180 to 180
- Roll: -180 to 180
- FOV: 30 to 150
Interactive Pan: Click and drag on canvas, scroll to zoom.
Keyframe Animation
Move the playhead, adjust controls, and click "Add Keyframe". The camera interpolates smoothly between keyframes.
Multiple Angles: Split a 360 clip into segments with different camera angles.
Tracks
The timeline supports three track types:
- Video (V1, V2...)
- Overlay (O1, O2...)
- Audio (A1, A2...)
Adding Clips
Drag clips from the Media Bin onto the timeline, or use the "+" buttons on each track.
Trimming & Splitting
- Trimming: Drag clip edges to trim.
- Splitting: Position playhead and use the razor tool or keyboard shortcut.
Track Controls
- Mute: Disable a track without removing it.
- Lock: Prevent accidental edits.
Resizing: Drag the bar between timeline and canvas to adjust height.
Export Modes
- Full Video: Composites video + overlays + audio into a single file
- Overlay Only: Transparent video (ProRes 4444) or PNG sequence

Quality Presets
- YouTube: 35-45 Mbps for 4K, faster export, optimized for YouTube re-encoding
- High Quality: ~130 Mbps, for archival or further editing
Hardware Acceleration
Uses Apple VideoToolbox automatically for hardware-accelerated encoding.
Sleep Prevention: Prevents macOS sleep during export.
Project Files
Projects auto-save to a .flumen file.
What is saved
- Overlay layouts

- Activity data references
- Video references
- 360 settings
What is NOT saved
- Actual video/activity files (only paths)
- Export output

Troubleshooting
Video shows black screen
Make sure the video file exists at its original import location.
Data shows "--"
Check that activity data is linked and the sync offset is correct.
Export crashes
Close other apps, use the YouTube preset. The production build is more stable.
360 not detected
Ensure equirectangular format. Export from GoPro Player first.
Fonts not appearing
Install fonts via Font Book, then restart Flumen.
